Sun Xiuwen. Problems and Prospects of Developing the Northern Sea Route in the Context of the “Belt and Road” Initiative

The article considers problems of development of the Northern Sea Route in the context of Chinese “Belt and Road” initiative. It gives an overview of recent assessments of the NSR prospects and its pairing with this initiative. Since the implementation of the NSR capacities requires not only solving problems related to legal regulation, economic competitiveness and protection of the environment, but insists on finding effective mechanisms for aligning the strategic interests of major players in the region as well. The author believes that the pairing of NSR with “Belt and Road” initiative is becoming more real.

L. Krasheninnikova. The Origin and Evolution of Missile and Nuclear Deterrence Between the US and China

The process of embedding China in a system of nuclear deterrence and the use of its status of a Power—possessor of nuclear weapons in the context of transformation of relations between Beijing and Washington are considered. The author comes to the conclusion that the divergence in approaches to “nuclear transparency” and recognition of mutual vulnerability brings qualitatively new stage of asymmetric arms race in the Asia Pacific region.

M. Alexandrova. Food Security of China and the Agricultural Exports of the Russian Federation to the Chinese Market

Currently stable level of food security in China is at risk to weaken in the near future under the influence of a number of negative factors, including a shortage of arable land and fresh water, increasing consumption and distrust to the quality of domestic food products, etc. It gives Russia, whose share in the food market of China is still small, to multiply the exports.

A. Afonasieva. Economic Activities of Overseas Chinese in the Countries along the Route of the XXI Century Maritime Silk Road

The article analyses resources of overseas Chinese business in the countries along the route of the XXI Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR-21). The author estimates the number of the Chinese Diaspora, compares the estimates for capital, the number and areas of employment for overseas Chinese and the PRC companies in 22 countries along the MSR-21. The conclusion emphasizes the direct dependence of overseas Chinese participation in MSR-21 on the policy of the Chinese government.

N. Biryukova. Liquefied Natural Gas Exports as a Tool to Expand US Influence in Asia Pacific

Due to the “shale revolution” the US could declare itself as an exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The premium market for its commercial realization in Asia-Pacific region are the largest importers of LNG — Japan and South Korea. Due to the economic features of American LNG projects the US identified the development trend of the LNG trade in the region and the country’s political leadership intends to use its export to ensure the “energy dominance” of the United States. The article aims to assess prospects for making LNG exports a tool of economic and political influence of the United States in the Asia Pacific region.

Z. Muromtseva. China: “the Modern System of Enterprises” and Approaches to New Financial Technologies

The article discusses the measures on deepening the reform of the financial mechanism of state-owned enterprises as the basis of the “modern enterprise system”. From the angle of concerns and interests of the real sector of the economy it analyzes the prospects for building a “modern finance with Chinese characteristics”. The global trend of modern financial technologies and diversification of derivatives not related to direct purchase and sale of tangible and financial assets are assessed.

V. Akulenko. Rethinking the Theories of Ethnogenesis of the Koreans in the Republic of Korea and the DPRK in 1960s

The article deals with the rethinking by scientists of the DPRK and the Republic of Korea the problem of ethnogenesis of the Koreans in the 1960’s. During this period a combination of political and ideological changes, along with the outlined progress in learning the ancient past of Korea led to the formation of trends, which play a crucial role in the understanding by scientists of two countries the process of ethnogenesis of the Koreans. In North Korea “jucheization” of ancient history was started. It led to formation of the autochthonous theory of ethnogenesis of the Koreans, while the Republic of Korea made a bet on an interdisciplinary approach that allowed to form a theory about migratory character of ethnogenesis on a multi-ethnic basis.

N. Mamaeva. The October Socialist Revolution of 1917 in Russia and the Development of the “Movement for a New Culture” in China

The strongest influence of Russia China experienced in the years of the October Revolution and in post-revolutionary period. The ideological and cultural influence of Russia on “the Movement for New Culture” in China (1915–1925), on the basis of which the May 4th Movement of 1919 was developed and the rise of the revolutionary movement in China took place in 1925–1927 was also important. The study of the ideological and cultural aspects of the interaction and influence of Marxism-Leninism in China demonstrates the specificity of the historical process there.

O. Borokh. Tao Xisheng and the Shihuo Journal: Chinese Economic History through the Angle of Western Thought

The article is focused on Tao Xisheng’s contribution into formation of social and economic history of China as an independent academic discipline in the 1930s. Theoretical and methodological approaches of the Shihuo (Food and Goods) Journal and its role in the assimilation of the achievements of Western scholarship in economic history are analyzed. Upon the example of series of articles of 1936, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, the connection between the studies in economic history and the debates on China’s path of development is demonstrated.

A. Lomanov. Du Yaquan and the Development of Chinese Cultural Conservatism in the 1910s

Chinese thinker, journalist and science writer Du Yaquan (1873–1933) in the end of the 1910s expressed the ideology of cultural conservatism that called for mutual connection and harmonization of cultures of China and the West. On the basis of original sources the article reveals his political views, including the concept of “continuism” in statehood, interpretation of relationship between the “old” and the “new” in China’s development, understanding of social foundations of revolutions. It is concluded that Du Yaquan represented the conservative trend that strived to avoid a break-up with national tradition in process of construction of new culture.

V. Myasnikov. Chinese Tea in Russia (Devoted to the 240th Anniversary of the Birth of Nikita Yakovlevich Bichurin)

The author covers in detail the history of Russian-Chinese tea trade, devoting his article to the 240th birthday of the outstanding Russian sinologist N.Ya. Bichurin.

E. Nazemtseva. The Problem in Soviet-Chinese Relations of the Law Status of Russians Living in Chinese Province of Xinjiang (1920–1924)

The paper dwells on analyzing the problem in Soviet-Chinese relations of the law status of Russians in Chinese province of Xinjiang in 1920–1924. Consideration included the policy of the Chinese provincial authorities towards former subjects of the Russian Empire and Russian emigrants, the problems and peculiarities of obtaining Soviet citizenship by Russians and returning to their homeland. Particular attention is paid to the role of the consular corps of the USSR in Xinjiang in setting the law status of Russians and to the impact of this issue on Soviet-Chinese relations.
