O. Zavyalova. Standart Mandarin and Han Dialects: New Realities of the Chinese Speaking World

Promotion of Standard Mandarin (Putonghua) is an important part of language policy in China. Chinese or Han dialects are still spoken by 80 percent of the country’s population, but in various regions, especially in advanced eastern provinces, they are rapidly losing ground to the official language. Preservation of dialects becomes an important element of social and cultural life in mainland China. Moreover, Standard Mandarin’s influence is also found in the regions where it has never been used or promoted, i.e. in Hong Kong and Macau and even among the Chinese speaking Muslims, Dungans in former republics of the Soviet Union.

Key words: promotion of Standard Mandarin, Chinese dialects, Dungan language.
