The paper analyzes the importance of Northeast Asia for Russia, defines regional challenges and risks to its national interests. Possible directions of Russia’s strategy in the XXI century are defined in order to strengthen its role in Northeast Asia and the Asia Pacific region.

A. Shlyndov. Military and Strategic Concepts of the PRC and Network-Centric Wars of the Future

The article examines the development of military theory in China in the late XX — early XXI centuries, when the United States and other western countries began to practice their newly developed methods of warfare — typical for the wars of the future. The author shows how these innovations, pioneered by the U.S. and its NATO allies against Iraq and the former Yugoslavia, have shaped the modern military-strategic concepts of the People’s Republic of China.

E. Kuzmina. Russian and Chinese Economic Presence in Central Asia. Is There a Possibility of Interaction?

This article analyzes the economic cooperation of Russia and China with the Central Asia’s countries on a bilateral and multilateral basis. The intersecting and overlapping economic interests of China and Russia in the region, the possibility of their cooperation in the economic sphere are investigated.

The article is devoted to foreign economic aspect of the transformation of Chinese yuan into global currency. Special attention is paid to its role in international trade transactions. The paper stated the growing influence of China’s currency in the global economy and finance.

A. Zhirnov. Iron and Steel Industry as an Engine of Economic Development of the Far East

In relation to the working out of a five-year plan for economic development of the Far East of the Russian Federation the author considers the expedience to build on the base of Kimkano-Sutar mine the steel plant with full technological cycle of processing iron ore. The necessity of massive exploration of iron ore deposits, able to provide the plant with mineral raw materials for 200 years, is being proved.

S. Toroptsev. Studies of Chinese Culture and Education in Russia at the Beginning of the XXI Century

The article highlights main tendencies in Russian sinological studies in the fields of culture and education in the 2000s, when the scholars renovated the fundamental analytical approach on a higher methodological level. The author reveals the new tasks of studies in philological, linguistics, theater and cinema fields as well as those in fine art and education. He analyses the problems of scientific research and translation while demonstrating the appearance of new theoretical concepts.

V. Portyakov. Basic Trends and Features in Research of International Relations and Foreign Policy of the PRC in Russia (2000–2013)

The article presents basic trends in research of international relations and foreign policy of China in Russia during 2000–2013. Main attention is given to contemporary Russian-Chinese relations, including comprehensive monographs, study of boundary problem, inter-regional ties and cooperation in various international frameworks. Publications on Sino-US relations and changes in the course of China’s foreign policy in recent years have been considered.

A. Larin. Chinese Migrants in Russia. Modern Russian Studies

Russian scholars created a complete story of Chinese living in Russia from the middle of XIX century up to the present day. The study of contemporary Chinese migration is conducted in such important areas as Chinese economic activity, the problem of «Chinese demographic expansion,» adaptation and tolerance, educational migration. Possible increase of the volume of low-skilled Chinese labor in Russia on a temporary basis is predicted.

T. Guruleva. Brand-Building of Border Territories in Terms of Russian-Chinese Cooperation (on the Example of the Trans-Baikal Region)

The article deals with the theoretical issues of territorial branding. The functions of territorial brand and its geopolitical meaning are defined. The associative images of border regions formed by online media of the Trans-Baikal region and Manzhouli (PRC) are analyzed. The mechanism of brand development for Trans-Baikal region is proposed.

V. Datsyshen. Consulate of Manchukuo in Russia. The History of Soviet-Japanese-Chinese Relations in 1931–1945

The article refers to the problems of the establishment and operation of the consular offices of Manchukuo in the Soviet Union. The examples of consulates in Blagoveshchensk and Chita demonstrate the complexities and contradictions in Soviet-Japanese-Chinese relations during the 1930s and early 1940s.

The article devoted to the 95th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Basmanov (1918–2008) tells about his life and creative activities. Particular attention is paid to his work on translations of Chinese classical and modern poetry.

T. Vinogradova. Concert Behind the Great Wall: «Chinoiserie» in the Works of Ismail Kadare

This article examines some aspects of the work of Albanian writer Ismail Kadare (b. 1936), living since 1991 in France. The writer is very famous in the West as a winner of the Man Booker International Prize in 2005, but in Russia he is up to now not highly regarded.

Kadare has written a number of works about communism that show similarities to fiction from other East European countries. He makes use of innovative and unique modes of writing about his homeland under the Enver Hoxha dictatorship.

In his novel «The Concert» (1978–1988) Kadare describes crumbling relations between Albania and China in the mid-1970s and the resulting trauma to individual Albanian lives.

The satirical thrust of the novel, the way it describes the Chinese party leadership, is still causing debate about Kadare’s nationalism and anti-Chinese sentiment.

E. Lachina. Comparative Analysis of the «Korean Wave» Through the Example of South Korean Taekwondo

Hallyu cannot be considered a new phenomenon per se, as we’ve seen other “national waves” before. We can find its analogs in Japan and China, whose cultures started to excite the West several decades earlier reaching their peak at the end of the XX century. We can also consider the successful promotion of taekwondo as the harbinger of forthcoming promotion of other components of South Korean culture.
